Trauma can come from many different types of experiences, even if we don’t recognize an experience as traumatic at the time, including divorce, sudden and unexpected loss, emotional betrayal, car accidents, or surviving natural disasters. Most of us have experienced at least one traumatic event before we even reach adulthood and these experiences can often help us to form negative views of ourselves and the world around us. Often a symptom of trauma is feeling stuck, trapped, hopeless, or helpless.
When a traumatic event occurs, our brains often don't process it properly which leads to us developing unhealthy beliefs about ourselves and the world. Using evidence-based EMDR therapy, the distress from disturbing memories will begin to lessen and feel further in the past - where they belong. This leaves you to feel capable of moving forward freely and with a sense of empowerment.
